Car...
June 17, 2008 - 5:14 pm

I fear.. my car, my free car, may be nearing the end of it's life. All things considered, a 2000 Saturn probably deserves to be put to sleep, but damn it.. I don't want a car payment.

This morning as I tried to go to work, as the song goes, I turned the engine, but the engine didn't turn. In was the same as in past situations... it wasn't dead silence or just the clicking or the starter. No, this was more. This the engine turning (so forgive the above misquote), but not catching... is the best way I can describe it. I tried three or five times and muttered to myself. I really didn't want to work from home.

I left the car to rest and think about it's impotence.

I logged on here... decided that I could indeed work from home if I had to and debated just who I'd call to come look at it.

A half hour went by and I decided, why not try again? All my morning email was done.

This time... it started right up. Curious how machines are like that.

I called the Saturn place to see jsut what was supposed to be done maintenance-wise as I just hit 100,000 miles. And was quoted a $300+ price. I coughed at the number. My car, at last valuing, was worth like $1,800. This work seemed excessive.

I'm not sure what I'll do. No doubt it does need new spark plugs, new transmission fluid and all the rest. I've not, to my recollection, done any of these things. Is a hefty bill worth it? If this adds a year to the life of the car, hell yes I suppose. Perhaps I will.. perhaps.
