making a difference
October 22, 2006 - 12:57 pm

what's the deal with famous-folk adopting kids from 3rd world nations?

don't get me wrong, i'm happy for the kids that have, in effect, won the lottery. don't get me wrong, i'm not at all against adoption... in fact, if i ever have a kid, it will probably be through adoption.

do the famous-folk think they are being super good people by doing this? do they they feel the world should shower them with accolades for rescuing one or a few kids from poverty i can't really imagine? do they really think they are doing something to make a difference?

if they really want to make a difference why not take a million or five and use that money to benefit a whole host of kids? why pick just one?

and, lets be real here.. how much money do you think, for example, madonna will spend on the child over a lifetime? millions. i don't doubt that at all.. so i'm saying, take that money and give it now to benefit more than just one kid.

why not pick a kid from this country? why is it always some 3rd world place? why not pick a kid that's handicapped -- physically or mentally?

i don't know.. i'm not them. i can imagine how they can feel guilty.. having all that they have and hearing about this or that country where people have basically nothing. i can understand that. i can understand it pulling at the heart strings and wanting to do _something_. i applaud that notion, really.. i do.

i'm just left with this taste in my mouth.. that the adoptions aren't really for the benefit of the kids.. but to assuage their guilt.. to make them feel better about themselves and what good people they really are.

again.. i say, if they really want to make a difference.. there's better ways to go about it.
