broke my pc yet again
February 13, 2004 - 6:20 pm

opps.. i did it again. did i talk about doing all sorts of tweaks and customizing of stuff on my pc? well, if not.. i did.

the result, as i knew it would be, is a slightly fucked up pc.

it takes _forever_ for me to boot and i'm not sure why. nothing i did should make it take longer to boot - at least in my totally uneducated opinion.

of course, to fix what i did (being that i don't exactly recall what i did) i did a system restore. this, sadly, didn't seem to correct things.

so, i've been doing the next best thing! changing more values and services and whatnot.

the result? no change.. at least not yet.

it occurs to me know that part of the problem might be that i'm changing stuff.. rebooting and not seeing an improvement, so change more stuff and reboot. perhaps what i need to do is reboot a time or two and not change anything between reboots. give the system a chance to settle down..

of course, that sounds really silly to me, but it seems the least.. damaging thing to do.

if any of you are good at such things.. here's my problem:

after starting up the black windows xp home screen appears. this normally is very quickly followed by the blueish 'welcome screen' and the rest of the booting. currently, i get the black windows xp screen and then about 20 seconds of pure black screen - nothing at all. the cpu light doesn't even flicker. then the blue welcome screen and all the rest. also, once my desktop appears it takes a while for my five desktop icons to show up. normally it's very fast.. as in my usual total boot time is about 25 seconds.

i'm not running anything new in startup, i've checked with msconfig.
