Elections
November 04, 2009 - 7:50 am

Your day is like mine.. except I don't eat sauerkraut and bratwurst. Not that I don't like them... it's just.. my diet is pretty simple.

In other news.. I am left to wonder if the shine has really come off the Obaminator. Republicans won the governor's office in Virginia and New Jersey. Both states voted Democrat in the 2008 Presidential election.

Of course turnout for this set of elections was down, but both wins are pretty substantial. Why would the Dem supporters stay home?

I'm left to wonder how many people turned in 2008 just because of who was running... How many people voted in that election simply because of the people involved and not the politics?

I'm also confused that Maine turned down the gay marriage issue. To me, marriage is a two part issue -- and I hope I have this right.

The first bit is that you get a piece of paper, the marriage license, from the government... so you are legally married.

The second bit is that you go to your place of worship and go through a marriage ceremony.

While they are normally quite related, they are really two separate things. Let the legal one, for everyone, be called a "civil union" and the religious one, for everyone, be called "marriage". Common use would be marriage for both... but let whoever is over the age of 18 (another arbitrary decision, but oh well) marry whoever they want. Let the religious organizations decide for themselves which couples they will do ceremonies for and which they won't... and life goes on.

If people really want to do something to defend marriage... we need to make it much more difficult to get a divorce. As it stands today, marriage is really something of a tentative agreement in the guise of a lasting promise. It's simply the nature of the modern person.

It's yet another way people make a mockery of religion and don't even realize it.

"Until death do us part" is more like "until things get rough" and more's the pity.
