An idle thought.. but one that lingers.

I'm watching the start to Locked Up Abroad -- I sort of like the show. It tells the story of someone who got caught in some foreign country trying to smuggle drugs.. or that's the usual story.

It's always an American... or an Australian... or a Brit... always in some place like Bangladesh, Columbia, or Singapore... some place with harsh, nasty penalties.

The person is always a basically good person trying to score a quick buck or just in a bad spot and forced to be a mule.

Anyway... as I watched the into and it was said how poor the place was... I thought, "Why not sell everything -- pull every bit of cash I could and move to some third world country?"

Why not step out of the annoying rat race and live on the cheap in some place that the money I have will go a long, long way?

I've said for years and years that 'civilized' people are really just indentured servants -- we like to pretend we are free, but we are slaves to pay off the mortgage, the credit card, the car... the whatever. We aren't free. Being free is having true choice... and sure we can pick, to some degree where we work, once you attain a given standard of living you just won't (but I suppose you could... though no one does) quit and take some minimum wage job.

No, I am not free to just quit my job. Too many bills... too much bounds to go to work even though more and more I'd much rather not.
