taxes
July 16, 2006 - 10:25 am

hrm.. interesting article thanks to fark (did i never mention i'm addicted to that site? it's actaully my home page...)

http://tinyurl.com/ethy8 (hurrah for tinyurl!)

what's the article about? tax cuts have lead to tax revenue increases. seems.. sort of contradictory, but not really. at least not to me.. but then i've had a healthy dose of economics training. what sort of pisses me off is that congress is debating whether to keep the cuts or let them expire -- letting them expire is the same as a voting for a tax increase.

yes, yes.. i know this gets all muddle up something or other about the cuts help the rich more than the poor -- and of course, in one way of thinking, that's true. however, it seems pretty damn clear that cutting taxes increases revenues.. which fund the programs the poor folk need.

this can get off into a quagmire of should poor folks pay tax at all.. and at first blush people tend to say "No" -- but that can lead to some pretty dire situations..

of course no one wants to pay taxes. why would we?

even if the role of the cuts is modest.. why repeal them? why "fix" something that's not broken?

the more money in my pocket.. the more i'm going to spend (hey, i'm a good consumer) and that means the more tax revenue there will be -- be it sales tax or corporate revenue taxes.

of course, the very first discussion post on fark was something about "but spending as increased" which.. i'm not sure how that fits in.

admittedly, i don't know enough about things to have a real firm opinion.. and sadly neither do most americans. instead we will hear soundbytes and pandering.. and make a choice without being informed.. and so things will go on.

nothing like a government "for the people, by the people" when the people don't have an f'ing clue what's going on...
