at a stop light
October 04, 2003 - 3:53 pm

just a few minutes ago i was sitting my car at stop light. i was thinking about the money i just spent, the new shirts and food.

a story i read yesterday, http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/3157570.stm, popped into my mind.

according to the study, people in nigeria are the happiest in the world. i've no idea how they measure that, but they do.

what really caught my eye was this: The researchers for World Values Survey described the desire for material goods as "a happiness suppressant".

i agree with that. there's never enough and no matter what you have, it's not what you want. industry is in a race to always make something better or something new that you have to buy.

people lament, 'they don't make it like they used to.' know why? not because they are cheap, but if it breaks.. you need to get another one. it pays to make things shoddy.

then i started thinking about getting my mba and what i'd do next and it occured to me that it doesn't matter what i do. i have to do something. i mean, it doesn't matter what job i take, i have to take a job.

i need money (money being a whole other topic that annoys me) to live. i am an indentured servant. so are you. an economic slave.

think about it. why do you work? do you really enjoy it? is it really what you'd choose to do if you could honestly choose? most people are so entrenched in the idea that they must work it doesn't occur to them to realize they don't want to work.

of course, the world would be a much different place if materialism and money didn't exist.

so, what do you think about while sitting a stop lights?
