Democritus - some dead smart guy

i found a book, i forget the title, that has a quote which...is the 'truest' statement i've ever read.

"The universe is made up of atoms and nothingness; everything else is opinion." by Democritus. perhaps paraphrased a bit.. but close enough.

think about that. everything is either an atom or nothing. all that you are is nothing more than a collection of atoms and emptiness.

we are not.. better than the univese. we are not some sort of special creature, we like to think we are. we like to think that we are special. we trot out all sorts of things about about ability to 'reason' and 'think'.

when you break things down though, we are just atoms and emptiness.. just like everything else.

the really funny thing is that good old Democritus said that something like 2,000 years ago and we are still working at proving it.

i forget who named the atom, but the misnamed it. according to Democritus the atom (a-tom) was the smallest, indivisible bit of matter. atoms were named in the early 1900's, misnamed actaully.

now we have the subatomic particles... and are that much closer to finding the a-tom Democritus said existed some 2,000 years ago.

nifty huh?

i forget what the actaul point was.. i meant for all this to be but a footnote, an interesting tidbit.

now, it's the whole entry. that's probably just as well
