oh the power of a pretzel
September 18, 2002 - 9:58 pm

i had a moment of sublime absurdity tonight. it happened while watching the west wing. it was the episode where the pres decided to have a guy assinated and the secret service guy garding cj was killed. i was pondering unspoken implications of both events while eating a sourdough hard pretzel.

sublime can be defined as: not to be excelled; supreme.

absurd can be defined as: of, relating to, or manifesting the view that there is no order or value in human life or the universe.

you migh think my epiphany (which can be defined as: a sudden manifestation of the essence or meanting of something) was due to the show. that as i pondered the inherent value or lack of value of human life...that does the individual human life truly matter or do humans, in our self-absorbed way, place meaning where there should be none...that the very nature of people is to be insecure and therefore in our minds we inflate our own individual value....

i liked the debate in the show about if the man should be assinated. he was judged to be unworthy to live and the order was given. i liked where the secret servie agent, who has been built up as a truly decent person, walked in on a robbery and ended up getting killed...that he had the important job of guarding our nations leaders and yet he died in a common drug store robbery. well, i don't like that died, i mean the underlying meaning.

you're wrong if you think my pondering the show and the abstract issues i so often get sidetracked on lead to revelation.

it was while considering what part of the sourdough pretzel to bite that i had my sublime moment of absurdity.

i like my pretzels all the more.
