"Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny." -- unknown

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results - Albert Einstein

ruminating
2001-09-20 - 8:06 p.m.

i was hungry driving on the highway today, so i pulled into one of those service stations to grab a hambugger and some fries. i ordered my food and then there it was in front of me, not a one minute later. as i walked to an empty table i realized that fast food is one of the downfalls of our culture. forget about the value of the food, i'm not talking about that. i'm talking about that we live in a society where you don't have to plan for something as basic as food. you don't have to think and wonder what to eat. all you need to do to the minute you feel the first pang (if anyone of us really feel a true pang that is) of hunger and pull off into the next fast food joint. they are everywhere. i bet within ten minutes of realizing you are hungry you could be sitting at a table eating a 'meal'. now you might be saying i have this all wrong. that the fact we live in a culture where food is so easily and readily available is a wonderous thing. i agree, but only from one point of view. the way i'm looking at this, fast food is a horrible because it leads to us getting used to having the most basic of needs filled in an instant. i see the results of this all the time at work. no one can wait for anything. no one can deal with leaving a voicemail. no one can accept the fact that it's just not possible to talk to three people about three different things at one time. i have people who will hold for minutes, listening to the most unholy music on earth, just to tell me that they are going to send me a fax. they can't leave me a voicemail and then go send the fax. we no longer accept that things go at a given pace. everything must be done now. we must have instant gratification for everything and anything here and _now_. i have people that order material and want to know if it will be delivered the same day. i'm appalled each day at the pure and simple lack of planning of countless people. every shipment must be overnight, without fail. if it's not next day delivery people get all upset and want to know why every single item available is not stocked on some sort of hovering craft that can fly at warp speed to any given address (not the given address which is often wrong, but the correct address they actually meant to give) free of charge.

we live in a world were people are out of touch with reality or at least how i think reality should be.

more and more i realize that everyone wants to do nothing and be paid wonderfully for it. each day i come to understand all the more clearly that there is no one i can trust. there is no one who looks at the world the same way i do. there is no one who i really understand, for i can not see or hear their thoughts. the more i think about things the more i come to the conclusion that each of is a complete and utter stranger to me. i can not predict your words, your thoughts or your actions. what seems logical and reasonable to me all to often seems absurd to others.

ah well, far to much ruminating for one night.
