Olympics....
February 14, 2010 - 9:51 pm

Sometimes I get these odd, out of no where thoughts. Like.. the other day when I saw part of the opening ceremony for the Olympics. I watched, however briefly, all the dancers and heard the music.. and saw the set... and thought, "How much did all this opening stuff cost?"

I know there needs to be something and I rather like the whole bit where the countries parade around and are introduced.

It's just.. there's so much of if it that's truly pointless spectacle. Like someone decided the opening should take 5 hours (or whatever), but the realized we really only have an hour of true stuff - the torch, intro the countries.. and that's really it. So let's make a really over-the-top production that's really just pointless glitz and glamor.

I had the vaguest of flashbacks to the China games.. and how even vaguer memories of hearing how much the stuff cost...

And then I thought, what if like half as much money had been spent on the ceremony? Or even if just 20% of the cost had been taken out of the games and put to some other use... like down in Haiti. How many lives would have meaningfully been impacted by that chunk of change instead of being poured into the ceremony?
