Croutons, whales and lost
May 25, 2007 - 2:09 pm

So.. today was a good crouton day. What makes a good crouton? Wel.. they are crunchy and seasoned. Today wasn't a great crouton day... just good. Not quite crunchy enough, but the seasoning was good.

I'll admit it. I'm one of the people hooked on the stranded whales story -- the momma and baby whale that swam up a river. Sounds like the start of chicken and road joke, but it's not.

Today I read an article that some folks are saying all the time and effort that's going into these two whales is dumb. Perhaps not dumb, but a waste. I guess years ago the same thing happened and it cost $2 million to herd the whale back out to see and this time around it's probably going to be a lot more.

At first glance, it's what's the deal? The whales look to be hurt by a propeller, so people should herd them back out to sea where they can better heal and live. Right?

We don't know why they swam up the river.. and why they won't go back past this one particular bridge, so we'll set that aside.

The basic point of the argument was why spend millions of dollars to save two whales when that same amount of money could be better spent saving a lot whales or other animals that need saving?

The answer, of course, is human nature. These two whales have been named.. they can be easily seen and their plight is easy to follow. People care.. but giving money to some organization that does something or other with it and, ultimately, more good isn't so easy to understand. You can't tell your friends, you know those two trapped whales? I helped save them.

People don't dig the vague factor quite so much.

I suppose it's the same thing whenever you consider the problem (like was on Lost) of letting someone you know die/like die to save others. Ok, so not quite like lost since jack likes everyone... but most people would say, in theory, if they could do A and 10 people will die.. and if they do B 100 people will die.. and if they do nothing everyone dies... they will do A -- unless, of course, someone they know and relate too is in group A. Then.. it's a different ball of wax.

And yes, lost kicked the shit out heroes. God the heroes finale sucked. The final battle the whole season had been building to was a waste of time. I'd have rather watched a quizzno's commercial.

I'm of the camp that the person in the coffin is Ben. Why? Who else would Jack not be a friend/family of.. but cry over? Who else would Kate not want to see at all?

Er, wait.. why you say would Jack cry over Ben?

Simple, Ben was right. Jack shouldn't have left the island.. he dearly wants back and he knows he fucked up. He saved everyone, but lost himself.

The only other person I'll consider at this point is Locke and much for the same reasons. Assuming Ben dies fighting on the island.. then it would have to be Locke who betrayed them and fought to keep them on the island.

Either dying and no one coming fits.

At least.. at this stage of the game. No one else fits. I do believe they said 'he', so it would have to be a guy.

Sawyer.. couldn't be. Kate would go to see him and the same with any other male lostie. I doubt Jack would care about any other other.. so it must be Ben or Locke.

All, of course, based on things as they are now. Who knows what the next two years might bring. It would be the most tragic of stories would it turn out to be Desmond.
