a bad, bad idea

i believe.. it's wrong to legistlate this sort of morality:

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/06/01/bush.marriage.ap/index.html

headline: "Bush to promote gay marriage amendment"

if memory serves.. an amendment on morality was tried with alcohol -- the _only_ such other attempt -- and it failed terribly.

in general, i think laws should serve one of two purposes: to protect me or to protect others.

if i choose to do something that doesn't harm myself or others.. then that's my choice. this is supposed to be the "land of free" - which means diversity.. which means individual choice.. and yet.. we seem, more and more, to be about becoming the "land of the same".

ok, stupid name.. i can't think of something better.

we seem to be about becoming a place where the majority dictates social issues.. and presecutes those minority groups they don't like.

this is wrong.

i know, i know.. you'll hear all sorts of people talk about how this country was founded on christian ideals and since xianity says homosexuality is wrong.. it's ok outlaw it.

the simple fact is that this nation was NOT founded on such ideals. go back and read the words of the founders and how they described themselves and their views. without a doubt snipets of what they said can be taken to make it look like they'd support this sort of thing, but if you read all they say.. it's pretty clear they wouldn't.

especially NOT at the amendment level of law.

hell, the first 10 are the bill of rights -- as in set-up to protect certain rights, not restrict anything.

in fact, name me another current amemendnet that constricts/limits freedom. that only should give you pause.

does this issue affect me personally? no, but that doesn't mean i shouldn't care.
