distracting myself
May 29, 2006 - 10:22 am

being.. the memorial day weekend, there's been tons of war shows. most of them.. i don't much care for.

two.. stand out in my mind as actaully worth watching. the first is, though part of it just fucks with my head, saving private ryan.

the second.. is a mini-series called band of brothers.

both of these shows.. can be quite graphic, but the topic is war and, therefore, they need to be graphic.

what appeals to me about each of these shows.. is that, as far as i can tell, they are two of the most realistic depicitions of war i've ever seen. speical effects.. are there not to make someone do so something superhuman, but to try and convey what it's like to be in a war.

the people in the shows.. are flawed -- they are real. band of brothers, more so than ryan, strikes me.. as some of the most powerful war-time drama you can watch.

anyway.. band of brothers is on.. that's what sparked me to write this.

what's the bit in ryan that fucks with my head? the end.. well, towards the end. one guy is on the second floor of a house. another guy is cowering at the foot of the stairs.. a german has crept up the stairs and gets into a fight with the guy on the second floor. a knife is drawn. they wrestle. the german ends up on top. the knife ends up pointed at the american's chest.. with the german slowly pushing it downward. the american fights.. the one downstairs hears the struggle.. and cowers. the german starts to tell the american to "shhhh.. shhh" as if to say, don't fight it.. it will be worse if you fight it. the american dies. the german wals down.. and past the cowering american.

i might have part of that wrong.. perhaps the end. i don't think so.

i can't imagine being any of those three people.. what it would be like to be one of those three people.

i think today is going to be about.. distracting myself.
