signs

signs signs everywhere is signs
fuckin' up the scenery and breakin' my mind
do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?

thanks tesla, the five man electrical band

i'm not really talking about billboards and whatnot, but all those little signs.. you're thinking of what to have for dinner and a commercial comes on with you favorite food.

i think most people do it to one degree or another -- you're not sure what to do, so something happens (a song plays, an unrelated conversation, an article you read, whatever) and you take that as sign of what you should do.

you've debated started to exercise and then hear a story about someone who did and met the love of their life at the gym -- so you say "that's it, i'm starting."

something completely unrelated to you becomes the tipping point and causes you to take action.

some folks say signs come from god -- not all signs mind you, just the ones they really like and think they should pay attention to.

some folks just say it's all coincidence.

take, for example, me. i've been debating leaving my job.. and what article did i see on cnn.com today? "your job: signs you've stayed too long" a perfect fit -- even if i've only been there a short time.

though.. it seems rather complicated that some unknown person would type up that article just to give me a sign.

do i take it as on? no. millions of folks in this country alone are debating quitting.. or longing to quit. it's an article that appeals to lots and lots of folks. some will take it as a sign.. the motivation to finally do it.

i recall many years ago on a 2 hour drive wondering about my future with a girlfriend. i couldn't sort out just what would happen with us.. where we were or were going. a song i'd never heard before came on the radio, "don't speak" by no doubt. suddenly, everything was clear in my head with regards to us.

did the song really play just for me to decide? that's silly. did it affect my choice? so it seems. did i take it as a sign then? sure i did. it tipped me in one direction.. and that's the way things played out. of course perhaps if some other song had come on in that instant, some positive song i'd have been tipped the other way -- and ended up sorely disappointed.

you see, she'd already decided things weren't going to work out..

my point is.. perhaps there really are "signs". i can't really argue there arn't. my point is that anything and everything can be a sign. anything and everything can be the little nudge to do whatever or say whatever. we assign the value to signs.

i'm of the opinion that "signs", at least saying "hey, that's a fucking sign! i know what to do now!", are really our subconscious whacking our conscience mind -- as if to say, "what the fuck is your problem? it's clear as day what to do! here's you stupid nudge, now get off your ass and go do it."

hrm, well. anyway. i need to go get dressed.
