politics.. marriage and ranting
June 26, 2004 - 10:28 am

it occurs to me that my head is in the sand, so to speak.

there are bigger issues that i'm artfully avoiding nd pretending don't exist. i'm rather enjoying my carefully constructed house of cards.

you see, the big worries i have, i can't do anything about. i've gone over them and over them.. and there's no way to 'fix' them right now.

i can either obesses about them pointlessly or pretend they don't exist.. until such time as they arrive or i can do something about them.

i choose to be worry free and clog up the back burner of my mind.

i'm using a lot of cliche metaphors today huh?

last night i watched a new show i've never seen before.. some guy called scarbourgh or something. he set about picking apart the anit-bush moore movie.

i knew it was over the top just from the little i'd heard of it.. but hearing some of the gross distortions in the movie.. is really sad.

i'm no fan of bush. i'm no fan of kerry.

i am, however, a fan of the truth. i find it extremely frightening that people are going to watch this movie and think it's true because it's called a documentary.

at least my head isn't in the sand that far.

what really irks me is that.. for as many silly/bad things as the bush folks have done.. why rely on distortions and half-truths? if he such a horrible president, why stretch things?

why not just present the unbiased facts and let them talk for themselves?

why show clips of dead iraq's and then splice in out of text converstations of united states soldiers talking about the adranaline rush being in war gives a person?

the idea of this one bit alone, which i havn't seen for myself, but they were talking about night, is enough for me to never ever want to see anything by moore. he's clearly got an agenda. he's clearly no unbiased.

i dunno. what really irks me that people are going to see this.. and believe it all.. and be led like sheep.

i've heard people say it's time to do away with the electorial college - that americans should vote directly for the president.

i say, fuck no! i say there needs to be a test before you can vote. you need to know what the fuck is going on in the world and in the country before you can vote. we need less, far far far less uninformed voters. i don't care if only 10% of the country is informed and qualifies to vote.. i'd much rather that than any easily led sheep voting.

i've no idea what i'm going to do this election.

i'm all for personal accountability. i'm all for a smaller government. well, my views can more or less be summed up by clicking on the link lp link to the right.

there's too many issues and things to really try and give a cohesive and thoughtful layout of what i think.

OH and this really gets me going.. the whole add an admendment to the constition regarding marriage.

here's a link to amendments:

http://www.house.gov/Constitution/Amend.html

read them.

notice something very important. the first ten or so are all about protecting you from abuses of the government. they include free speach, unreasonable searches, etc. all good stuff to help keep us 'free'.

the rest are similiar.. with one exception - if i can do my roman numerials right - the 18th. the prohibition amendment, making alcohol illegal.

this is the first and only amendment that actully serves to limit what people can do. it didn't last too long. in fact, it was a huge boon to criminals.

now, i'm not saying that gays being able to marry will cause a spike in criminal activity.. what i'm saying is that in our history only once has an amendment been added that limited what people can do.

isn't one of the tenants of this country - life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?

each person has their own life. each person has their own views of liberty and happiness - and unless what they want to do hurts you, they must be free to do it. if i need to lay out a slippery slope arguement regarding this.. well, then you're just not thinking.

an important thing to talk about is that marriage in the eyes of the law and marriage in the eyes of religion are two different things.

if a religion wants to say gays can't get married. that's fine. that's their religion and their choice.

however, we common law marriage where a man and woman who live together for x amount of years are legally considered married. this has nothing to do with religion and yet in the eyes of the state and corporations they are married.

we have people who are just married by a justice of the peace - no religious ceremony at all and they are fully married in everyone's eyes.

why can't gays do the same?

now before you start blathering about how we are losing our moral compass and this and that. before you go on about how we need more religion and that married religious couples are in some way 'superior' to other couples..

know this: results verified findings of earlier polls: that conservative Protestant Christians, on average, have the highest divorce rate, while mainline Christians have a much lower rate. They found some new information as well: that atheists and agnostics have the lowest divorce rate of all. George Barna commented that the results raise "questions regarding the effectiveness of how churches minister to families." The data challenge "the idea that churches provide truly practical and life-changing support for marriage."

link: http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_dira.htm

interesting that religious groups who are saying gay marriage will lead to erosion of the family.. really arn't doing so hot themselves. in fact, according to the data, atheist and agnostics, have one of the lowest divorce rates - 21%.

i think, what it comes down to is this.. it's an issue with human nature. most people don't like that which is diffrent. most people are taught that romantic love is to be between a man and a woman. anything that varies from that.. is wrong.

people see two guys kiss.. and they feel squimy - though i'd wager a good number pay to rent videos or search online to see two woman kiss.

eh, this is too long.. and i've not well thought out what i said. undoubtedly i have holes in things. so feel free to point them out and i'll patch them up.

to me, someone who isn't homosexual, it comes down to freedom. what do i care if two men or two women want to get married? they have every chance of having just a stable a marriage as, say, baptist (divorce rate of 29%).

why can't two dads provide a quality home for adopted kids? kids need love. single dads raise kids. single moms raise kids. why not two moms?

would would that be radically differnt from say.. a mom and her sister raising a child? or a mom and her mother raising a child?

in other words, get your head out of your ass and let people live how they want to. it doesn't hurt or effect you.. so have your opinion and enjoy it.. just don't try to force your opinion on the rest of the people.

and for god's sake stop thinking adding an admendment we are just going to repel will 'fix' things.

being homosexual is natural. do some research on unbiased sites and learn about how it's found in many species in nature.

isn't this supposed to be the land of the free? a country founded by those who found themselves in the minority and wanted to create a place where the ability of the majority to abuse and dominate the minority was severly limited?
