"Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny." -- unknown

A piece of me is in the sewer
August 26, 2008 - 10:09 am

So.. yesterday on my first 'real' vacation day... I decided to buy some watermelon.

About.. 25 minutes after buying said melon, I contemplating how to dispose of the rinds since I'd cut all the yummie yummie parts into chunks. I decided I could give my garbage disposal a work out... and proceeded to cut the rinds into smaller pieces.

About.. 10 minutes after that I was walking into the lobby of the local hospital and inquiring where the emergency room was.

You see.. in a moment of utter stupidity I held the rind the wrong way.. and sliced my finger. I don't mean a typical sort of 'cut', I mean I sliced it. More like a divot really. I cursed. I muttered. I wondered where the nearest walk-in clinic was.. and drew a blank. I'm about 1 mile from the hospital so there I went. Leaving behind the sliced off skin to do down the drain.

In the words of the nurse who looked at my cut, "Oh, I see... there's nothing to stitch is there? It's just.. well, you sliced right down the slide of your finger didn't you?"

Indeed, I did. How big? Perhaps the size of a dime. I'm not really sure. I simply knew that bandaids wouldn't work. In fact, I was curious just what the hospital would do. As said, there's nothing to stitch. Turns out.. they have these gelatin (yeah, like jello) pads they press into place and then wrap gauze around. The gelatin foam stuff soaks up tons of blood and basically makes it so one can clot. Once clotted.. you can start to heal. The gelatin stays on (so I'm told) about a week.. and then just falls off.

So.. I've got one sort of gnarly looking finger with some dried blood on it. You see, I can't really clean my finger since.. water would sort of dissolve the gelatin. I've sort of cleaned it and will do more in a couple days... but I'm pretty sure that being less than 24 hours later, should I dissolve too much of the foam, I'd simply start to bleed again.

And.. no doubt I'll be in for some good ribbing at the family reunion come this weekend. I'm sort of hoping I'll be off the foam (though that's really only like 4 days, not a week) and can just use a normal bandaid. Time will tell.

And in other news.. my confusion lingers. I may not be wrong after all. Words and actions... words and actions. Why can't folks simply get both to 'say' the same damn thing?
